Downward to drain, Upward To Lift

The cardinal rule of gua sha: always work the neck first. The neck holds the majority of our lymph nodes, but which direction to go?

Between the jaw and the collarbone, lots of lymph activity occurs. The neck is a drain for all the waste material from the face, so this is very helpful for detoxification. This helps de-puff the face, brighten a dull complexion, and promote detoxification.

Tip: Go slowly with very gentle pressure

Upward strokes lift the skin. This also encourages healthy qi and blood flow up to the skin of the face. We generally recommend starting your ritual with upwards strokes on the neck and finishing with downward strokes to "take out the trash" and detox the skin.
